FAQ

What should I look for in an acupuncturist?

You should make sure that the acupuncturist is a member of an appropriate professional body, such as the Association of Acupuncture Clinicians (AAC). The AAC guarantees excellence in training, safe practice, and professional conduct. Before starting treatment it is a good idea to speak with the acupuncturist. It is a chance to ask any questions that you may have and be reassured that they have the appropriate experience and qualifications to treat your condition.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture has an excellent safety record. The needles are single-use, sterile and disposable. All AAC members adhere to a Code of Practice approved by the Department of Health.

Should I continue with medicines prescribed by my doctor whilst undergoing a course of acupuncture treatment?

Yes you should. You may feel during a course of acupuncture that your need for prescribed medication has changed, in which case you should review it with your doctor.

Do I have to be suffering from a specific condition to benefit from acupuncture?

While acupuncture is often used to treat specific problems, many people use acupuncture as a preventative treatment or just for the sense of wellbeing that so many people experience from it. Because it focuses on whole body wellbeing, it is effective at many levels for many people.

What happens if I have multiple health complaints?

This is frequently the case for acupuncture patients. An acupuncturist will work to treat them all simultaneously while concentrating on the most troublesome.

What does it feel like?

The needles used are very fine and when the needle is inserted, it does not feel like having an injection. The sensation is often described as a warm tingling, or a slightly dull ache.
